Jerry “Soupy” Campbell

Portrait of Jerry "Soupy" Campbell

Jerry “Soupy” Campbell, a CFL Hall of Famer and former linebacker for the Calgary Stampeders and Ottawa Rough Riders, is seen here at his home in Toronto Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009. Mr. Campbell is now 65. He is suffering from Alzheimer’s and recently had hip replacement surgery. Doctors say the Alzheimer’s could be related to multiple concussions and the hip might have wore down from the constant pounding on the gridiron. The hip became infected, requiring two subsequent surgeries. His wife, Kim Campbell, is now faced with the prospect of leaving him home by himself when she returns to work on Monday due to limited supports in the community. The CFL has no emergency fund to help such people, although the alumni association is trying to create one during Grey Cup this week in Calgary. Mr. Campbell was once a brute force of a man. His wife says he is shrivelling before her eyes. (Photography by Tim Fraser for Calgary Herald)
